Love Film and Fashion History?

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

If you like period films with costumes pulled from the pages of fashion history AND you live or plan to visit the mid-Atlantic this fall, make a point of stopping in on the “Fashion in Film” display at the Winterthur museum in Wilmington, Delaware.

Winterthur is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (of the DuPont Corp.), and it’s an incredible showplace of 18th and 19th Century antiques showcased in a magnificent 20,000+ square foot home.  Going there is like stepping back in time, as Monsieur du Pont was an avid collector who had the resources to indulge his passion.  It will not disappoint.

The “Fashion in Film” exhibit features 36 costumes worn from period films like Emma (1996) and Elizabeth (1998), and is accompanied by a lecture series and other festivities.  The exhibit runs until January 7, 2007, and you can learn more about it here:

Winterthur is located in north Wilmington, about thirty minutes south of Philadelphia, two hours south of New York City, or two hours north of Washington, D.C.

Why not make a weekend of it?  It’ll be fun!

Petite Clothing - A Thing of the Past?

Monday, May 29th, 2006

First it was Petite Sophisticate and Casual Corner.  Now it’s Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s.  They’re doing away with their petite departments to make room for trendier labels and clothes.

Read all about it in this NEW YORK TIMES article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/28/business/28petite.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5088&en=68f23efd5ac9867e&ex=1306468800&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

So what’s a petite gal to do?  Aside from buying big and tailoring to size, or having clothes custom-made, there are still a few places that offer petite sizes.  Here’s a list right here:

Hope this helps!

Plus Size Clothing Resource for Travel Clothing

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

In addition to the plus size clothing resources listed at:

http://fashionforrealwomen.com/plus_size_clothing.html

and the travel resources listed at:

http://fashionforrealwomen.com/travel_clothing.html

comes this resource from reader Kris Glick:

“Just thought I’d pass on some info on material that doesn’t wrinkle which is wonderful for the large woman.  I’ve started getting outfits in the slinky knit material. They are absolutely fantastic!  They are so comfortable and don’t show a lot of wrinkles when traveling. So far I have found a couple of sites for the plus and super-sized woman.

For those with  a medium budget there is:

Plus Woman
www.pluswoman.com

and for those with an unlimited pocketbook there is:

Astarte
www.astartewoman.com

Keep up the good work with the newsletters.”

Kris Glick

Thanks Kris.  The clothing on Astarte is a bit pricey, but then again, the fabric and detailing is unlike anything I’ve seen in this size range.  Lovely!
