Fashion Designer Valentino to Retire After 45 Years In Business

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Well, it had to happen sometime.

Just weeks after celebrating his design house’s forty fifth anniversary with a lavish, multi-day party in Rome, fashion designer Valentio has announced his plans to retire.  The January couture shows will be his last.

“Last July, in Rome, I celebrated my 45th anniversary in fashion. It was a moment of infinite magic and tremendous joy, and I cannot fully express with words how deeply moved I was by the occasion,” said Valentino in a statement. “I received an outpouring of good wishes from all over the world, which brought me great satisfaction. I was very touched that friends-old and new-traveled from far reaches to be a part of the festivities. It was a moment that will be impossible to repeat. And so, at this time, I have decided that this is the perfect moment to say adieu to the world of fashion.”

Valentino went on to say, “My future will be filled with new interests and challenges. Some may be linked to fashion, as I have a strong desire to create and support institutions to promote the study of fashion design, and to preserve the history of the art of fashion. It will be a marvelous continuation of this amazing adventure that I had the privilege to have. Even as a young boy, my passion was to design, and I have been very lucky to be able to do what I have loved all my life. There can be few greater gifts than that. I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business.”

His successor, Alessandra Facchinetti, will take over the Valention’s Women’s Wear collections.  Her most recent tenure was at Gucci.

Arrivederci, Valentino!

Atlanta to Ban Baggy Pants?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Baggy pants that show boxer short or thongs could be illegal under a new bill proposed by councilman C.T. Martin.  The proposed ordinance says that the “indecent exposure of his or her undergarments” (including bra straps) would be illegal and punishable by fine.

Martin feels that the baggy pants have become “epidemic’ in the city and across that country, and that even small children are trying to imitate this trend.  “I don’t want young people thinking that half-dressing is the way to go,” he said.  “I want them to think about their future.”

Not surprisingly, the proposal has drawn fire from the hip-hop community, who strongly identifies with this manner of dress and feels that the bill infringes on their First Amendment rights.  Still, a similar ordinance was passed in Louisiana earlier this year, where showing underwear in public is punishable by a $500 fine or up to six months in jail.

Gwen Stefani, Diane Von Furstenberg File Copyright Infringement Suits

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Trendy discount retailer Forever 21 is facing a slew of copyright infringement lawsuits, according to Women’s Wear Daily.  Gwen Stefani, Diane Von Furstenberg, Anna Sui, Bebe, and Anthropologie, among others, have accused the retailer of selling clothing and accessories that infringe on their copyrights.

“I believe the Forever 21’s business model is to copy the designs of other well-known designers,” said Marya Lenn Yee, a partner at law firm Donovan and Yee.  She’s representing Anna Sui and Toronto-based jewelry designer Foxy Originals, both of whom claim copyright infringement by the retailer.

Many of the designers claim the retailer has infringed by copying fabric prints distinct to their design houses, which can create confusion in the minds of the consumers.  That’s how Von Furstenberg’s claim began last March, when she charged the retailer with copying prints from two of her dress designs.  Later, they discovered several other items that they feel have been copied.  Anna Sui’s lawsuit claims the chain has copied some of her items dating back to 2005.

Forever 21 had no comment on any of the charges or pending litigation.

Neiman Marcus Security Breech

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Neiman Marcus reported this week that personal information from 160,000 current and former employees fell into the wrong hands earlier this month when one of its computers was stolen from a third-party contractor working on the company’s pension plan.  Names, addresses, Social Security numbers and the like were among the sensitive information stolen for the period ending August 30, 2005.  Employees hired after that date were not affected.

Neiman’s has contacted all the employees whose information was jeopardized and has offered to pay for free credit monitoring for a year.

There’s nothing like taking every precaution to safe guard the information in house, only to have it fall into the wrong hands elsewhere, huh?

H&M Opening Causes Hong Kong Stampede

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Hennes & Mauritz, the venerable Swedish fashion house known as H&M, opened a new store in Hong Kong over the weekend — that was so popular, it required crowd control.  Nearly 1,000 shoppers started lining up outside the new store at 5 am.  Why?  Because the first 500 shoppers were promised a pair of M by Madonna sunglasses.  The Hong Kong store is debuting the Madonna label, and several lucky shoppers were even given jackets signed by the Material Girl.

H&M, often called the “Ikea of Fashion,” H&M offers stylish, of-the-moment clothes at discount prices.  With more than 1,200 stores in 25 countries, the 60-year-old retailer continues to prove that fashionable women clearly love a bargain.
