Pantone's Color of the Year

How to Wear Pantone’s Color of the Year 2017

Pantone announced its “Color of the Year” for 2017 in December, and the looks creative fashion lovers have come up with since then are amazing.

But who is Pantone?

And what, exactly, do they do?

Pantone is a color company that started in 1963 to help identify, match, and communicate color so the graphic arts community could accurately match colors.

Pantone's Sky Blue, color 0821-cMeaning that one person’s “Robin’s egg blue” might be another person’s “sky blue”, which lead to all sorts of confusion.

Pantone discovered that by assigning each color a specific number – such as Sky Blue 0821-c (at right) – it eliminated all the confusion. Each party knew exactly what color the other was referring to.

This standardized the way graphic artists spoke to each other and was so successful that it quickly spread to other industries, including fashion, architecture, and interior design.

Today, Pantone continues to match and categorize colors, but it also creates colors, does color forecasting, help brands come up with custom colors, and much more. If you’re in an industry that deals with colors, you’ve probably used Pantone. They’re the world’s color experts.

Here’s Pantone’s Color Report for Spring 2017:

These are the colors you’re going to start seeing in fashion, home décor, paint, etc., in the coming weeks – if you haven’t already.

Why?

Because people crave novelty.

They like new stuff.

So the fashion industry strives to meet those needs. So does Pantone.

So what’s the color of the year?

I’ll allow Pantone to tell you:

An usual choice, perhaps, and one you might think you’d never be able to match.

But Pantone has you covered. Here are some of their recommended combinations:

Which brings me to…

Wearing the Color of the Year

So now that you’ve seen what others have done with this color and palette, what can you do?

Here are some ideas:

Purple with greenery color of the year
Pink with greenery color of the year

Slade blue with greenery color of the year
No, I didn’t initially plan to go with the animal themed bags on these.  I just saw them and thought they were cute…. 😉

So what’s the bottom line?

Even if this particular shade of green doesn’t look great next to your face, you can wear it elsewhere in your ensemble. It’s fun, easy, and right on trend.

Do you have to incorporate this color in your wardrobe?

Of course not!

I’m just letting you know what’s in fashion so you can make an informed decision.

Most people will say, “Oh, that’s not a great color,” and blow it off.

But when you see it combined with different colors in different ways, it sparks your creativity. It expands your frame of reference.

So play with Pantone’s Color of the Year – if you dare!

You’ll be right on trend.

  • Thank you for the ideas for using this color of the year. I had immediately dismissed it because it is a color I would never consider, but you have given me food for thought.

    Oh Diana,
I love this colour. I look glowing and young and healthy when I wear this colour. I will be looking in the stores for tops and scarves and jewelry in 15-0343 TPG Greenery. What a wonderful way to add a punch of colour to my neutral wardrobe of navy and grey. Hooray for Spring!!

On another note, I meet once a month with a lovely group of ladies who were my mom’s friends and who have mothered me ever since I lost my mom very young 30+ years ago. It is my “Grandmas’ prayer group” night tonight. We will be praying for your daughter, she has been “on our list” since you first told us about her health struggles. The grandmas are on it, they have her back.

    Blessings
    Sued

Hi Sue – I’m so glad this color works for you! It’s definitely a challenge for some people, but for others, it works beautifully. So glad you’re one of them!

Thanks also for prayers for my daughter. It is VERY much appreciated!
