Accessories Trends 2011

Now that the holidays are over, are you looking for a way to add some excitement to the rest of the season?  Me too!  Here are a few fun ways to add a little “mmph” to your wardrobe with accessories trends – that also “up” your style quotient:

Statement Shoes

First it was the statement handbag, then the statement necklace and then the statement bracelet.  But fashion is fickle and like a junkie looking for the next hit, fashion has delivered the very latest and greatest for 2011:  the statement shoe.

Yes, yes, I know:  great shoes go in and out of style.  But I haven’t seen this much excitement about footwear since the days when they were stuffing costume jewelry, miniature cars, and tiny stuffed animals into the heels of Lucite platforms back in the late ‘70’s.   I say “go with it” if you’ve got the legs and inclination, because there are some really, really cute shoes out there.  Warning to shoe lovers:  walk away if you’re tempted to max out your credit card.

Dark or Patterned Tights

I don’t want to say, “I told you so,” but I knew this day was coming a long time ago.  While anyone under the age of 25 may think hosiery is “old lady-ish,” the reality is that legwear has been around for 1,000 years for a reason:  it keeps your legs warm.

Here’s how to do it 2011-style, without resulting to (gasp!) flesh-colored hosiery.

Hair pieces

When I was a little girl, I thought it was magic that made my mother’s hair short one day and long the next.  I had no concept of wigs, falls, or hair pieces.  But while extensions have been around for a while, faux hairpieces haven’t been this popular since the 1960’s.

So if you’re looking to do something different with your hair every now and again, like try a different length, get a saucy bun, or even add a pony tail, try a hair piece.  You’ll be delighted by all the compliments!

Faux Fur Accents

Faux fur has become a hot, hot accessory in recent years, trimming everything from hats and vests to shoes and handbags.  Fortunately, with all the amazing faux fur options available these days, you can be both pro animal and pro style without compromising your stance on nature.

Over the top pieces

Remember when things were over-the-top in the 80’s?  No?  Well, it was in response to the recession of the late ‘70’s.  When times get tough, people hunker down and do what’s required.  But when the pressure’s off, they like to celebrate.

Like now.  As the stock market soars and the jobless rates declines, we’re seeing a return to opulence we haven’t seen in a while.  So if you want to and your budget allows, try an over-the-top bracelet, handbag, or pair of shoes.  It’s sure to start conversations.

So – some, flirty ways to spice up your winter wardrobe.  Pair them with your winter clothes staples for a fresh new look and make them the focal point of your outfit.
