I’ve been watching Royal Pains on Netflix – a series about a concierge doctor set in The Hamptons during the summer – and am kind of blown away by how well the costume designer, Caroline Duncan, works a color wheel. Not only are her color combinations for each character amazing, she also color coordinates each scene so the actors’ clothes coordinate with each other.
It’s like a masterclass in color.
That you can use for yourself.
White and Anything
Nothing says summer like white. Pair it with any color for a cool warm weather look.
Orange and Blue
These colors are opposite each other on the color wheel, which means they’re complimentary. It’s a great combo that most people don’t usually consider.
Turquoise and Pink
These colors are also complimentary, which is why this combo is so eye-catching.
Purple and Yellow
A third complimentary combination. Cute!
Blue and Green
These colors are next to each other – analogous – on the color wheel. Again, it’s not a combination that usually springs to mind, but it works beautifully.
Pink, Orange, and Purple
Another analogous combo. Each character is rocking his or her own ensemble, yet they all work well together. Consider that when posing for all your group photos this summer.
Blue and Yellow
These primary colors work well together.
Same colors, different combinations. This is how you can pack light and make a little do a lot.
Red and Yellow
These primary colors also work beautifully together.
Monochromatic can mean all the same color or of the same color family. Mix tones and textures for a unique look.

What’s fun about these combinations is that you can start with a simple, solid colored piece and mix and match them with other solid pieces and fun accessories to create spectacular, head-turning looks.
See how easy this is once you know what to do?
Like I said, watching this series is like taking a masterclass in color.
