Holiday Dresses for 2010

What’s hot for holiday dresses this year?

While black, red, and green are always popular, a great jewel color that works well with your skin tone will also see you through seasons of use.  The biggest concern for most women this time of year is budget – lots of things you need to buy, only so much money to go around.

So, be smart with it.  See what you can recycle, reuse, and re-purpose from your existing inventory, and then add judiciously as needed.  Try a velvet jacket or a frothy new blouse.  How about some patterned hosiery or bejeweled shoes?  What about those beautiful earrings your mother gave you that you haven’t worn in years?

Sometimes, all you need is a little inspiration to get your creative juices flowing.

So let me give you some.  For 2010, the big trends in holiday dresses include:

  • Velvet
  • Lace
  • Satin
  • Ruffles
  • Faux fur

Here are some ideas of what to wear when:

Office Party

Make it festive, but keep it professional.  Not too much leg, cleavage, or skin in general.  Remember:  you’ll still need to work with these people on Monday.

If it’s not work-related, get a little sassy and have some fun.  Or, if it’s one of many you’ll be going to this year, opt for simple, classic lines and pieces that you can accessorize in different ways and wear again and again.

Keep it fun and comfy, and make sure you have plenty of waistband room for ham, pie, and egg nog.

Sparkle, glitter, and glow.  After all, how many “last night of the years” are there?

Again, let some of these ideas inspire you.  If your budget can bear it, grab a few new things.  If it can’t, revisit your closet and see if you can’t recreate some of these looks from your existing inventory.    Just because you have to wear your “old standby” LBD doesn’t mean you can’t make it look totally different by changing the accessories, like wearing a scarf, adding a belt, using different jewelry, etc.

Have fun, and Happy Holidays!
