The Lone Ranger Costumes

The Lone RangerThe Lone Ranger movie is coming to theaters July 3rd, and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing it. It’s from the same group who made all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, so if nothing else, you know it will be filled with big sets, big explosions, and Johnny Depp one liners. You’ll also get to see fun but accurate period costumes, courtesy of Penny Rose.

If you don’t know the name, you probably know her work. The Lone Ranger is just the latest of more than a dozen period movies she’s costumed over the years, including Evita (1996), King Arthur (2004), The Prince of Persia (2010), and all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies (2003-2011). Nothing like have an “in” at Disney.

Her heroes always look dashing, and the heroines always look prim and proper – until they don’t. It’s hard to remain unflappable in the midst of swords, bullets, and explosions. Still, it’s fun to watch Penny Rose in action, because she knows fashion history – as the costume details for The Lone Ranger clearly demonstrate.

So why talk about movie costumes?

Well, as I’m finishing up my Fashion Style Blueprint course, I’m reminded of just how much clothing tells the story in any situation. I haven’t seen The Lone Ranger yet, but I can guess from the ladies’ costumes that Ruth Wilson plays a hard working frontier woman…

Why she’s leading the townswomen anywhere remains to be seen:

Just a quick note to let you know what I’ll be doing over the long holiday weekend: seeing The Lone Ranger with my family. If you happen to catch any movies this weekend, check out the costumes and see how they “tell the tale” of each character.
